Do Hair Plugs For Men Work

By Stuart Barnes

Hair plugs are the best way to get hair growing in a completely bald spot.  You probably know them by another name such as hair grafts or hair implants or hair transplants but they have been called hair plugs for years.  The original hair transplant methods were developed in Japan before World War II.  At that time, most of the work was done with implanting hair around the eyes in the form of eye lashes.  Thick eye lashes were a necessity for the fashion of the day.  It wasn't until after the war that this procedure was discovered by the US cosmetic surgeons.

At this time cosmetic surgery was in its infancy so there were not a lot of people who were even experimenting with ways to augment natural beauty.  Most of the work with hair loss at this time was focused on balding issues in men.  The micro-surgical techniques available today though were not able to be used so the results were not really as good as they could have been.

At this time a doctor would cut out a chunk of scalp at the back of the head.  This is an area that hardly ever sees hair loss due to normal male pattern baldness.  These chunks with the associated hair follicles and shafts would then be surgically implanted into the bald spot.  This gave a result that was not very pleasing as the hair tufts tended to just stick up every which way.  This is actually where the term hair plug came from.  The hair implants looked like the plugs of hair that are stuck in a cheap dolls head.

The following picture gives you and example of what didn't look very good.

Bad Hair Plugs

This is not how the hair plugs of today look. The results now are not even noticeable.

Hair Plugs Care

So once you have the hair implant procedure what do you need to do to care for the plugs the rest of your like. Actually, after a few weeks, you don't need to do anything other than what you would do for the natural growing hair. Once the hair implants are inserted it takes a few weeks for the roots to connect with all the surrounding blood vessels. At this point then the follicles start to recover and produce hair shaft material. Within about six months the patient sees a good amount of hair growing where there was only a bald spot before.

From then on hair plugs care just means you shampoo and style the hair the same as you always did. The new hair grows and continues to grow for years to come.

Cost of Hair Plugs

The price you will pay for a hair plug treatment varies substantially based on a lot of variables.  There also seems to be pressure on prices right now because of the current economic problems we are experiencing.  That being said, there are several rules of thumb that can be applied to get a fair idea of the cost.

Usually individual implant units cost about $3 to $7 to be transplanted.  It can take anywhere from from a few hundred to a few thousand of these grafts to get the job done.

As you can see there is a fairly substantial cost but it is worth it if you are going to try to treat your baldness effectively.
